Mr. Rolando Armuelles, Business Development Director of Alcenit Corporation, participated as a panelist at the round table organized by Thunderbird, The American Graduate School of International Management in Arizona, USA, to discuss the current state of affairs of the economic sectors of Panama. Mr. Armuelles joined Mr. Domingo Latorraca, Mr. Jorge Mastellari, and 22 senior executives of Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) on November 8th at the Hotel Playa Bonita. WWL is regarded as the fifth largest customer of the Panama Canal.

Alcenit Corporation is pleased to congratulate Mr. Roberto Rodriguez, who represented Panama in the XVI Central American Masters Athletics Championship. Mr. Rodriguez earned a gold medal in the 800m competition and a silver medal in the Olympic walk. The international event was organized by Pandeportes and brought together 300 athletes from Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Panama. Mr. Rodriguez's participation was made possible through the sponsorship of Alcenit.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE, for its acronym in English) has promoted Min Chen to the degree of Senior Member. Senior Member is the highest grade that IEEE members can aspire. To be eligible, candidates must be engineers, scientists, educators and technology executives in the areas of IEEE, having more than ten years of experience and significant professional performance for a period of at least five years.

In The IEEE is a technical and professional association, non-profit organization dedicated to standardization, which brings together professionals in electrical engineering, electronics, mechatronics, computer science, and biomedicine. It has over 400,000 members and volunteers in 180 countries. Its mission is to promote creativity, development and integration, sharing and applying advances in information technology, electronics and general science for the benefit of humanity. IEEE produces more than 30% of the published literature in the world on matters within its scope, organizes more than 1,000 conferences a year worldwide, and has nearly 900 active standards, with 700 more under development.

Synergy between Quality Frameworks and Technology Methodologies October 19th, 2011 |

Every business aims to increase its ability to meet the increasingly challenging demands of their customers and in turn, find new markets. Global trends require that the strategies of Information Technology (IT) are aligned with business objectives and have a focus on service, quality and the client. As a result of these needs, quality frameworks, standards and good practices have emerged, that reduce costs, increase capacity and preserve the knowledge of an organization from the point of view of technology: RMM, ITIL, CMMI, COBIT and ISO. The main motivation for the adoption of these models in Panama is still following the global trend without understanding the differences between models and the true potential of these to boost competitiveness.

In order to present the importance of processes and compare the principal IT quality frameworks, Min Chen, Principal Consultant of Alcenit Corporation, gave the lecture "Synergy between Quality Frameworks and Methodology in Technology" on Wednesday October 19 as part of the Update Lectures on Information Technology organized by the City of Knowledge. It was attended by members of the Network of Entrepreneurs and representatives from private companies interested in optimizing their operations based on industry best practices.

Mr. Rolando Armuelles Velarde, Director of Business Development Alcenit, spoke at the 3rd Conference of Innovation and Business - Biz Fit 2011, organized by the Panamanian Chamber of Information and Communication Technologies (CAPATEC), with the talk "Screw + IT: what innovation is really about ".

Before a packed audience of businessmen, professionals and technology enthusiasts, Mr. Armuelles addressed common problems of IT departments, that cause unrest among their users and customers. He also listed some simple actions that pose a challenge to the Panamanian society and which, if solved, would represent real innovations. During his speech, participants expressed their respective views of what technology will achieve in 40 years. Finally, Mr. Armuelles set out the competencies expected of IT for the future and called for doing the basics (quality, processes, training) before embarking on more ambitious innovation projects.

Security Risks in Smartphones August 23rd, 2011 |

Our country is experiencing a boom in smartphones that surpasses that of laptops, driven by competition among network providers, which has brought lower prices and an increase in bandwidth. Although Blackberry use is predominant iPhone and Android also experience high demand. Smartphone devices are increasingly powerful and versatile, making it the preferred form of Internet access worldwide. The processing and communication capabilities of these devices involves opportunities to perform or be subject to criminal activities.
In order to present the main platforms for smartphones, their vulnerabilities and preventive measures, Alcenit Corporation’s security expert, Mr. Italo Dacosta, gave a conference on "Security in Smartphones", as part of the Update Lectures on Information Technology organized by the City of Knowledge. It was attended by members of the Entrepreneur Network and representatives of private companies, telecommunications providers and NGOs interested in preparing contingency plans for their respective organizations.

Mr. Italo Dacosta is a consultant specialized in computer and network security for mobile devices. He has published in prestigious computer security conferences worldwide and has presented in countries such as Germany, China and the United States. Mr. Dacosta is a doctoral candidate in Computer Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a graduate of Electronics and Communications Engineering from the University of Panama. His experience has led him to work as a security officer in both the private and the public sector.

Besides describing the basic principles, the speakers will address case studies and propose possible future scenarios and applications of each technology. The Talks are an excellent opportunity for the audience to be exposed to concepts central to their business initiatives, which can make the difference between local success or high growth and global projection. Similarly, this event its intended to promote the exchange of ideas between experts and the audience. The Talks begin with three subjects in high demand: security for mobile devices, how to select software correctly and ICT quality frameworks impact in the business.

This year only 356 engineers around the world received this status. On June 24th took place the Corporate Information Security Seminar organized by the Business Institute of the Americas at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Mr. Rolando Armuelles Velarde, Director of Business Development Alcenit participated as a speaker with the conference Centers for Security Incident Response (CSIRTs). Attendees heard about the origin of the CSIRT, CSIRT types and their creation process. Mr. Armuelles also presented incident coordination training and support offered by the CERT/CC at the Software Engineering Institute.

Methodology for Enterprise Software Selection June 1st, 2011 |

Lorna Sanchez, Principal Consultant of Alcenit Corporation, will deliver the conference "Integral Method for the Selection of Business Software" at an event organized by IEEE Panama Section and Computer Society Panamanian Chapter . This conference is offered for the first time in the country will take place on June 1st at 6:30 pm at the Finisterre Hotel in Panama City. It is aimed at procurement managers and technology managers of organizations that are responsible for recommending, selecting and purchasing technological solutions. The purpose of it is to present an evaluation and selection methodology for enterprise systems developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) of Carnegie Mellon University, which allows integration risks mitigation, and increases the likelihood of meeting the expectations of the organization. The methodology ranges from acquisition planning and evaluation criteria identification to data collection and final selection based on criteria.

Distinguished Visitor of IEEE Computer Society March 14th, 2011 |

Min Chen, Principal Consultant of Alcenit Corporation, has been accepted in the Distinguished Visitor Program (DVP) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society for Region 9 (Latin America). The honourable distinction was reported recently by Fernando Bouche, President of IEEE Panama Section. Through this program, Mrs. Chen became the first Panamanian to participate as a speaker since the program's creation in 1971. The DVP purpose is to support local IEEE and Computer Society organizations in Latin America, so they can have access to high-level technical conferences in the fields of computer science.

The Inter-American Development Bank selected Alcenit among three Panamanian SMEs taking into account the added value, quality certification of the company and export path.
The globalization of outsourcing services is a dynamic sector. The forum seeks to highlight the potential of Latin America and the Caribbean in these matters. With the support of Trade Promotion Agency of Andalusia - EXTENDA, Alcenit Corporation will join the International Technopark of Panama City of Knowledge delegation in the Fourth Edition of the International Business Forum & Networking Business ICT, to be held in Seville on April 6th - 7th, 2011.
Business ICT is the largest B2B event with networking format of the Spanish-speaking world, directed exclusively to employers and managers in the ICT sector. It is organized by the Association of Information Technologies and Communication of Andalusia (ETICOM) and the Association of of Electronics, Information Technology, Telecommunications and Digital Contents of Spain (AMETIC). Business ICT brings together over 700 professionals and 350 companies in this sector, with Mexico as the guest of this edition.
By 2012, Panama will be the guest country, so it is important to involve the City of Knowledge and their companies in this important forum.

Alcenit Corporation joins CAPATEC Board of Directors March 1st, 2011 |

Rolando Armuelles Velarde, Director of Business Development at Alcenit Corporation, was elected to join the Panamanian Chamber of Technology (CAPATEC) Board of Directors on March 1st, 2011. The other elected members of the board were Ramon Varela, Eli Fashka, Henry Bonilla, Jaime Blanco, Matias Prado and Glenn Tjon. They, as a team, will be in charge of leading the Chamber in the 2011-2012 period.
Mr. Armuelles in a brief speech highlighted the importance of teamwork to provide continuity to the plans designed by the previous Board of Directors and the value that the Chamber has delivered to all its members. He also put at the member's disposal his former experience as directive of the IEEE Computer Society Chapter Section Panama.
CAPATEC faces the challenge of boosting the country technology sector by improving the environment for ICT businesses, supporting education initiatives in ICT, and advising on strategies for development.

Blueprint for a PMO Seminar February 17th -18th, 2011 |

The seminar "Blueprint for a PMO: Building and Enhancing a Project Management Office" was successfully delivered by noted author and researcher Eduardo Miranda, Ph.D., fellow consultant at Alcenit Corporation.
Aimed at business executives, CIOs and project managers, the seminar focused on teaching how to create, manage and optimize the operation of a project management office to promote technological efficiency, and to reduce risk, duration and cost of projects.
In the Intercontinental Miramar Hotel met executives and project managers of the public and private sectors, such as ACP, Ricardo Perez, S.A., Banco General, TESA, Global Bank, ADR, St. Georges Bank, and Caja de Ahorros.

Among the attendees were given copies of the book "Running the Hi-Tech Project Office", written by Eduardo Miranda, who has also written over 10 papers in the areas of software development methods, estimation and project management. Mr. Miranda is currently a professor at Carnegie Mellon University and an international consultant. His work experience includes world-class companies such as Ericsson and Lockheed Martin. He has worked in a variety of countries including Argentina, Canada, Israel, France, Sweden, Brazil and Ireland.

Software Architecture Seminar January 20th, 2011 |

The National Authority for Government Innovation (AIG) gathered more than thirty IT directors and IT project managers of governmental entities of the Republic of Panama, at the Institute for Technology and Innovation, Building 167, Clayton City of Knowledge . The government personnel participated in the Practical Software Architecture for the Public Sector Workshop, hosted by Alcenit Corporation and delivered by the Jaime Oviedo Silva, software engineer graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University in the U.S., certified CMMI And Alcenit fellow consultant.

In addition to presenting an introduction to software architecture and concepts such as middleware, BPM and SOA, Mr. Oviedo performed a comprehensive analysis of strategies for ICT development based on his experience in government sectors in countries such as Chile, Argentina and Mexico. With the participants, he reviewed case studies and lessons learned in other latitudes, including the importance of political will to modernize public administration, supplier management, procurement, the role of international organizations, financing, and methodological issues to ensure large-scale technology project success.

The sixth edition of the Software Engineering Process Group - Latin America (SEPGLA) conference took place in Medellin, Colombia. The SEPGLA is one of the most important events taking place in the Latin American market in the field of software engineering, IT process, and management practices related to software development and systems organized by the European Software Institute (ESI) with support from the Software Engineering Institute (SEI).

Min Chen and Lorna Sanchez, Alcenit principal consultants, had an outstanding participation at the conference, thanks to the support of the Panamanian Chamber of Technology (CAPATEC). They presented the paper "Building the Business Case and Improvement Roadmap for Low Maturity Small Organizations". The paper proposes a proven methodology to measure the impact of the lack of processes and use these data to create a business case for process improvement. It is based on concepts of multiple reference frames, while maintaining an agile approach for easy and rapid adoption in small settings and low maturity.

Software Engineering Institute delegation visits National Authority for Government Innovation in Panama July 14th - 17th, 2010 |

The National Authority for Government Innovation (AIG) has established a partnership with the world's leading authority in software engineering, the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), with the goal of working in innovative programs to benefit the country.
The President of SEI, Dr. Paul Nielsen, and four known members of his staff visited Panama between 14th and 17th of July to meet with Mr. Eduardo Jaen, Director of AIG, to understand the national context and learn more about the innovation project "Paperless Panama".
The SEI used this visit to share with the government and private telecommunications and information technology sector the latest trends in software engineering, worldwide large scale projects, and industry best practices for innovation and software development. AIG also spoke with Richard Pethia, SEI expert and Director of CERT, about the possibility of establishing a government team on computer security.
The SEI expressed interest in supporting Panama's bold innovative initiatives such as "Paperless Panama", which are aligned with the SEI's vision of promoting the use of software to contribute to the development and welfare of society through technology.
Mr. Jaén appreciated the visit of the SEI and its interest in collaborating with the country. He also noted that involving such a prestigious international organization as an adviser to the technological development of Panama is an unprecedented step in national history.
